CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Reimu Hakurei
Character Canon: Touhou Project

History: http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Reimu_Hakurei

AU History: There are some records that still exist of the Hakurei family from even before the Pokemon War and the founding of Union, but those records are rather sketchy. All that's really known for certain is that the family has always served a particular god, and while that god's name was one of the things lost, it is known that this god was one that represented Protection and Balance. Balance between Man and Nature was considered one of the most important tenants of those who served the god, so when they came to Union and their family merged with that of the Savior, the priestess who founded the new shrine in the city chose to dedicate herself and her family to continuing this in the name of keeping the Savior's promise to the gods.

Since then, the Hakurei clan has served Union in many ways, with members of the family going into politics and joining the guard and the Swords of the Savior, but there was always at least one branch of the family maintaining the shrine and continuing to promote balance and protect humans and pokemon alike in a less official capacity. This included not just protecting humans from pokemon and helping pokemon in need, but making sure that fellow Enlightened kept from abusing their powers. Unlike many other Enlightened families that claimed direct lineage from the Savior, the Hakurei remained mostly upper middle class and other than those who entered politics, they kept to themselves, not even the politicians making much of a show of their heritage.

The family did dwindle a bit over the generations, and as far as Reimu knows, she's currently the only living member of it. Her mother died protecting civilians from wild pokemon in the Old City when she was seven, and rather than going to an orphanage or into foster care, she chose instead to remain in her family's shrine, with a family friend keeping an eye on her. They don't even actually live in the shrine with her, at least not since she was 10, but does live near by and checks in on her once a week. Mostly her only constant companion at the shrine is an Eevee named Ruukoto who she found near the Old City and nursed back to health when she was a child. At present she's about 15.

Canon Personality: Reimu has a rather inconsistent and contradictory personality that is a little hard to pin down at times. She is described in canon as being a simple, straightforward and optimistic girl who treats everyone the same regardless of whether they're human or youkai, but this doesn't always coincide with her actual behavior. While she does, in fact, treat everyone the same in most cases, this doesn't really mean she's nice, as this usually involves being at least vaguely disrespectful and sometimes a bit grumpy towards everyone equally. She's also rather lazy and dislikes training, but since she's also naturally talented at most things, she rarely needs to train anyway.

She has made many friends among the youkai, admittedly mostly through beating them up and then inviting them to tea later, even though conversely she often seems to be annoyed by the presence of youkai at the shrine due to believing that it's because of youkai being her most frequent visitors that she doesn't get many human visitors or donations. Despite this belief, she usually doesn't actively try to stop them from coming to the shrine, at least if they're a friend, because she doesn't really mind the company seeing as she gets few other visitors. Still several of them often do things that annoy her to no end and she's not afraid to let them know that even if it won't change anything. Still, so long as you aren't doing something to annoy her and she's just relaxing around her shrine she's friendly enough.

She's so lazy when it comes to her job that, unless someone does something to provoke her or someone like Yukari applies a boot to her butt, she will often wait until the last possible moment to get involved in an incident. It's not entirely clear, but she may actually dislike her job to some degree, even if she will still ultimately do it anyway because in the long run she does understand how important it is. When she finally does get involved however, she is very good at her job, if a little overly aggressive and trigger happy. Her primary method of incident resolving involves flying around beating up everyone who gets in her way until someone points her in the direction of the culprit, after which she will beat them up and then invite them back to the shrine for tea so they can explain why they caused the incident.

When it comes right down to it, Reimu really is pretty straightforward most of the time, being pretty honest about things to the point where she rarely thinks to lie and is very transparent about the rare times she does. She gets along pretty well with animals, who seem to like her in turn, and according to at least one person who should know these things, despite all the grump and the aggressiveness she's really a pure-hearted person who is incapable of truly hating anyone. Also, contrary to what some people might think, while she does grumble about her shrine's lack of money and can occasionally be a bit money grubbing, she's not really greedy either. Money is just a major concern because she does have to eat after all. She's also incredibly stubborn and refuses to give up very easily, if at all, especially the very rare times she loses at something. Reimu is also actually a bit distant from others, not really regarding anyone as special despite the number of people who count her as a friend, as the Hakurei Miko must try to remain neutral in order to properly keep balance, though there might be other reason for it as well. This means Reimu is a bit more alone than she might at first seem.

AU Deviation: Since the Hakurei clan traditions in this universe are far less of a burden than her canon duty as Hakurei Miko and, in all honesty, Reimu actually could've walked away from it without any real consequences after her mother died, but chose to remain at the shrine and carry on those traditions anyway, Reimu is still a generally lazy person, but is far less reluctant to resolve incidents than she is in canon. She will still complain about it occasionally, but she will respond more quickly than she does in canon without needing as much provocation.

Also, while she does still go around beating people up some times, she will usually do this far less indiscriminately and she will even actually attempt diplomacy at times. Her method in canon mostly worked because it was mostly Youkai she was dealing with and the Hakurei Miko was basically one of the most important people and highest authorities in Gensoukyo so she could get away with acting like that more. Here in Union she would've learned a bit more discretion, and while still hyper focused she would at least try to avoid jumping to conclusions and try to think things through more, at least with other Enlightened. This doesn't mean there weren't still misunderstandings that lead to pointless brawls with other Enlightened though. They just weren't as frequent as such fights in canon were.

Pokemon are also not a perfect parallel for youkai in this universe, and keeping balance between humans and pokemon is very different from keeping balance between humans and youkai. In canon the Hakurei Miko was supposed to prevent youkai from doing things that would give them too much of an advantage or threaten the human population too much, which was why beating them up was the most common course of action. Also in canon it is generally believed that humans stopped believing in youkai when they stopped having reasons to fear them, so humans fearing youkai is important for youkai's survival. There are those who disagree with this and want to try and foster peace between the two races, but canon Reimu is skeptical of this.

In BNW however, this isn't an issue and humans and pokemon could potentially come to work together some day even if that's pretty far off from happening at this point, so that is actually one of the goals of the Hakurei Shrine of BNW. This means protecting humans from wild pokemon while also helping any pokemon in need and doing anything that would encourage humans and pokemon cooperating with each other. Reimu is most suited towards the protection bit and diligently will do so at every given opportunity, but since pokemon are at least like youkai in being more aggressive and prone to eating unwary humans she will be a bit more trigger happy when it comes to pokemon causing trouble for humans. That plus the fact that as she isn't a Kinderd Soul or Child of the Verdant Forest, she can't communicate with them as easily means her method of dealing with pokemon who cause Incidents will be a little closer to the way she deals with youkai in canon in some ways since it will involve a bit more violence, but she will still try to find out if something provoked them into doing whatever it is they're doing rather than just pummeling them into submission first and asking about it later, so it's not exactly the same.

Still as a result she is also a bit more social in general, even if she's also still a bit distant in some ways. The distance in this case having more to do with her mother's death than anything related to her duties. She's also still as easily annoyed and prone to complaining and lazing about when it comes to training as ever.

Canon Abilities:

Power of Flight: Reimu's main ability. Despite the fact that everyone in Touhou can fly, Reimu's ability is different because she initially couldn't early on and her ability goes beyond normal flight into something insanely broken. Reimu can literally “fly away from reality,” making herself completely intangible and impossible to hit by any method. She only uses this ability in her Last Word spell card Fantasy Heaven, which is a time out card, thus imposing a time limit on how long she can remain in that state, but it's implied that she could potentially stay that way indefinitely if she were to ever truly get serious.

Aura Manipulation: A power that's only ever mentioned once in canon and never shown is Reimu's ability to sense and manipulate auras.

Divine Power of the Hakurei: This is what powers most of her other abilities, allowing her to make and use her traditional Miko tools like ofuda, and spirit needles. It also allows her to create barriers which is another thing she has a talent for.

Danmaku/Spell Cards: Link Danmaku, meaning Curtain Fire, is the form magic in Gensoukyo takes for magical duels. The spell card system is a primarily non-lethal fighting system Reimu invented to put humans and youkai on a more even playing field and part of that is named attacks of increasing power and complexity. Reimu's spell cards mostly center around her divine Hakurei powers and skill at creating barriers. Like most touhou characters who show up in more than one game as playable she has a ton of them.

The Hakurei Yin Yang Orbs: Her family's ancestral weapon. Mostly used in gameplay as mobile turrets that can shoot whatever bullet type the player selected, they can also be hurled at opponents to do damage, duplicate, and even grow rather large in size. They're incorporated into many of her spell cards. She even once used them to communicate with her teammates from a long distance away by leaving one with them in Subterranean Animism. They also have various mostly useless mundane powers like allowing her to eat as much as she wants without getting fat, releasing pleasing odders and disguising themselves as a cat.

Enlightened Abilities: Reimu is Normal/Flying/Fairy type and her trait is God of War.

Her flying type mostly manifests itself as an ability to fly without wings, which she'll have from the beginning due to being a God of War and thus stronger than the average Enlightened. Her normal type doesn't actually factor into her abilities much, except for some of the personal barriers that she can create are normal type. Pretty much all of her attacks are Fairy type. At lower levels she'll mostly have the ability to conjure ofuda and needles charged with the fairy type which she can throw at opponents as well as a her weakest spell cards as Fairy Type attacks. An example would be the bomb variant of Spirit Sign: Fantasy Seal.

Her first evolution will strengthen her fairy type attacks and normal type barriers, also giving her the ability to make barriers with fairy type affinity. She'll also be able to fly faster, though her flying type still won't manifest itself beyond that. She may also gain red eyes, albit ones that are a bit closer to mahogany in color and could probably still look closer to brown in some lights. She will naturally gain even more of her spell cards converted into fairy type attacks.
Her second evolution will give her another power boost and also allow her access to a variant of Fantasy Heaven, allowing her to vanish from reality for a limited time (probably no more than a minute) while attacking simultaneously. At this stage she'd get another minor alteration in the form of an aura that makes her seem more ethereal in appearance though it's ultimately an illusion and she won't truly change physically.

Her enhanced item will be a Fairy Type infused version of The Hakurei Yin Yang Orbs, which can do everything they could do in canon.

Reimu would probably learn one of these days not to complain of boredom out loud where the gods and certain Gap Hags might hear, possibly. She'd probably end up in less trouble if she did at least.

Not that she actually minded a distraction from the humdrum that set in between Incidents at the shrine, but ending up in some other world wasn't exactly what she had in mind. Particularly when she was practically forced into it by some stupid meteor coming to wreck her shrine if she didn't use the strange devices she was instructed to use.

In the end, she mostly went along with it because she was bored, even if she probably should know better, and even if there was a meteor headed for the shrine she probably could've done something about it herself, but whatever.

The next thing she knew, there she was in some place that was definitely not Gensoukyo, with her old familiar Geniji turned into some weird floating thing and strange black creatures attacking them, which she was able to take care of easily, and collect the odd crystals they dropped even. The shrine had come with her, and she was fairly certain at this point that Yukari wouldn't do that, so that at least ruled her out as the culprit. Whoever it was who'd set this up was going to have some explaining to do. Interrogating her “Server player” didn't give her much info to go on as to who's ass she needed to kick to get home, so she'd have to look around.

She is stopped however, by some little foxes who call her the Honored Medium, whatever they mean by that, and beg her to help them with trouble they'd been having with spirits sent by someone called the Denizen. Hey, maybe that'd be a good first lead.

She smiled at them. “Sure, I'll help you. Tell me what I need to do.”
